The Blockbuster
In this follow-up to his first book The Full Monty, Ryan Canning (formerly of Field Marshall Montgomery PB and Pipe Major emeritus of Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia PB) presents 49 of his own compositions and his own arrangements of other tunes and includes 19 harmony scores. The first tune in the book (a two part 3/4 march, The Siege of Dubrovnik) is worth the price of the entire book. It is compositional genius. He has arranged Willie MacDonald’s brilliant 6/8 “Trees of North Uist” as a jig and Tommy Muirhead’s wonderful 2/4 “Carradale Bay” as a hornpipe. There is a lot of interesting music here to pour through.
